We couldn't bear to waste a day of holiday with Dan so decided on a little hike round Eyam. We used a map by walking-books.com called Making Tracks: Fun walks for children in the Peak District. Robin and Niki left the pack at our house after a week at our house. The girls enjoyed using the map, it had simple picture intructions for them to follow. I got a little confused as you couldn't tell which direction was North (give me an OS map any day and I am happy). The walk was lovely though, it took us up around Eyam to Mompesson's well, then back along a lovely wooded path into Eyam and through the villiage. The girls enjoyed watching horse riders, eating sweets on a gorgeous hillside in the sunshine and reading about the victims of the Plague.
Joseph enjoying the walk.
Gorgeous views over the peaks.
St Lawrence Eyam Parish Church
Inside is an interesting stained window telling the story of the Plague in Eyam, also the pages where the death dates of the villiages are written. It's worth having a read about the village. They really were a brave little community, sacrificing themselves to protect the surrounding villages from the awful disease.
These paintings were recently rediscovered after being white washed over during Cromwell's reign in the 1650's.
This depicts the tribe of Asher. Genesis 49:20 Out of Asher his bread shall be fat and he shall yield royal dainties.
Apparently the Puritans frowned upon decoration on the interiors of churches.
